Few views in the Caribbean stop people in their tracks like the Pitons: two forested volcanic spires rising straight from the sea on St. Lucia's southwest coast. Add warm mineral baths, rainforest trails, sunset sails and resorts designed around those views, and it is easy to see why St. Lucia is a favorite for honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals.
Here is what makes the island so romantic, and how to plan a couples' trip that gets the details right.
The Pitons Management Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 for its exceptional volcanic scenery and geology. The area around the town of Soufrière is the island's romantic heartland, with the Pitons visible from beaches, restaurants and many hotel rooms.
Near Soufrière, Sulphur Springs is often described as the Caribbean's only drive-in volcano. A short guided route takes you past steaming vents and bubbling mud pools, and nearby mud baths let you cover each other in mineral-rich grey volcanic mud before rinsing off in warm spring water. It is playful, a little messy and genuinely memorable.
Tip: The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority recommends going in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. Bring swimwear you don't mind staining, and a towel.
Pair it with: the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths, a quieter, more restorative soak among tropical gardens, fed by geothermal springs.
St. Lucia's most romantic resorts are built to frame the scenery. Our St. Lucia guide lists our full shortlist; here are the signature stays couples ask about most:
Want livelier evenings? Consider splitting your stay between the north of the island, near Gros Islet and its Friday street party, and the Pitons in the south.
St. Lucia's Creole cooking is hearty and full of flavor. Try the national dish, green fig and saltfish (green bananas with seasoned salt cod), and fresh fish at waterfront restaurants. For something livelier, join locals at the Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party, held every week, with grilled food, music and dancing in the streets. St. Lucia makes destination weddings straightforward. According to the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, there is no residency requirement: you can apply for a special marriage license within 24 hours of arrival, while a regular license requires you to be on the island two days before the wedding. Confirm the current document list with the tourism authority or your resort's wedding team before you travel.
St. Lucia has two airports. Hewanorra International (UVF) in Vieux Fort, in the south, handles most long-haul flights and is the closer airport for Soufrière and the Pitons; Sulphur Springs is roughly 45 minutes away by car. George F. L. Charles Airport near Castries mainly handles inter-island flights. From Miami, American Airlines operates service to St. Lucia; schedules vary by season.
U.S. citizens need a passport valid for the length of the stay, an onward or return ticket, confirmation of accommodation and proof of funds; no visa is required. Before you fly, you must complete Saint Lucia's online Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) / electronic border form; the State Department warns travelers who skip it may be denied entry. Saint Lucia's Ministry of External Affairs lists a maximum tourist stay of six weeks.
Leave camouflage at home: Saint Lucia strictly bans camouflage-pattern clothing and accessories, including for children, and items can be confiscated.
The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged at EC$2.70 to US$1. U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, hotels and taxis, though change often comes back in EC dollars.
St. Lucia drives on the left, renters need a local temporary driver's license (sold at car rental offices), and roads are narrow, steep and winding, with signage sparse on the road to Soufrière. Many couples prefer a private driver or resort transfer, especially from Hewanorra, and the State Department advises against driving at night. Taxis are not metered, so agree on the fare before you set off.
